Hi Fellow CAFTRs, I just received word that this year's SPR conference scheduled to take place in Amherst, Massachusetts, has been canceled. All conference fees will be refunded, and all abstracts will be published online. For additional information, please go to the SPR website: www.psychotherapyresearch.org. I hope to see you all in Heidelberg, Germany, in 2021! Geoff Geoff Goodman, Ph.D., ABPP, FIPA, CST, CSAT-S, CMAT-S, RPT-S Associate Professor Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program Long Island University 720 Northern Blvd. Brookville, NY 11548 (516) 299-4277 http://www.drgeoffgoodman.com http://www.rurallibrariesresearchnetwork.net ________________________________________ From: Geoffrey Goodman Sent: Friday, April 24, 2020 9:31 PM To: caftr@psychotherapyresearch.org Subject: RE: CaFTR RE: latest paper from IMPACT Thanks for your response, Nick--I'll be eager to hear about what Bai and Fiorini find. Anyone else on our e-forum who has questions for Nick, please step forward! This is a rare opportunity to pick the brain of a co-author of this important published study. By the way, I have not heard anything from the Executive Council at SPR about the annual conference in Amherst, Massachusetts. The website indicates that the conference is still happening. I will let you all know if the conference is canceled due to pandemic-related concerns. The case of the IMPACT study’. The link for registration is here: https://www.bacp.co.uk/events/onlineresearch2020/<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.bacp.co.uk/events/onlineresearch2020/__;!!DeIc-uvKXH9G!sHfvAhJ-iwohxfV--gJjsGt_m9Jka5lVzvVDxYHIGeQtSckFz-Qr5xFBONoef4TjzWS66gc$> I was originally hoping to include something in the talk about this work on trajectories of change, but had too much to try and cover, so cut it in the end – but Geoff is absolutely right to highlight the clinical significance of these findings. As it happens, the comments about how this might link to Blatt’s work is something that is already on our agenda as a research team, and one of our excellent PhD students, Yushi Bai, is working on this right now. (If she’s on the forum please do contribute!). Another of our talented PhD students, Guilherme Fiorini, is also following up on the trajectories work by looking at trajectories of change in general psychopathology (the p factor), since this first study was only looking at changes in depressive symptoms… Once that work is complete, I’m sure he’ll share it here on the forum 😊. I’d certainly welcome any discussions / questions connected to this work on the e-forum! All the best and maybe see some of you there Terry Sent from my iPhone On 23 Apr 2020, at 21:04, Geoffrey Goodman <Geoffrey.Goodman@liu.edu<mailto:Geoffrey.Goodman@liu.edu>> wrote: Hi Nick and his co-authors, This article represents a major contribution to the literature on adolescents suffering from depression because it demonstrates that not all depressed adolescents respond the same way to treatment. So congratulations to Nick and the others who worked on this project! The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry is one of the elite journals in our field. To get some conversation going among the listserv, I'm wondering whether the two groups you identified--continued-improvers and halted-improvers--might be associated with characterolological or personality features. Two theoretical frameworks immediately come to mind: Sydney Blatt's distinction between anaclitic depression and introjective depression on the one hand, and preoccupied and dismissing attachment on the other hand. I think there is some literature (perhaps by Mary Dozier at the University of Delaware) that suggests that dismissing individuals often don't benefit beyond the early part of treatment because they have difficulty forming a secure attachment to their therapists. So I would guess that the halted-improvers might be overrepresented among the dismissing patients. Similarly, I would guess that the halted-improvers might be overrepresented among those suffering from introjective depression. I don't know whether the AAI or ORI was administered, though, to determine whether this is the case. Do others want to comment? Any students want to ask questions about this research?
