Hi Nick, Well done on another article coming out of your lab! I haven't done a thorough reading yet, but skimming it, several thoughts come to mind to generate some discussion on this forum: 1) In addition to pretend mode, there is psychic equivalence mode. Nick mentions this mode briefly on p. 7, but I'm wondering whether a separate article could address the unique features of working with children stuck in psychic equivalence mode. 2) Has anyone on the forum given any thought about how to operationalize pretend and psychic equivalence modes? Might someone on this forum want to develop assessment techniques for identifying and quantifying levels of pretend and psychic equivalence modes in children? It might require measuring a child's mentalization skills both before and during a lab-based, controlled stressor to measure the drop in skills as well as the mode. 3) Might we be able to identify and quantify patterns of therapist-child interaction ("interaction structures") associated with each of these modes? 4) What is the relationship between these two modes and symptom patterns (e.g., internalizing vs. externalizing)? How are treatment outcomes impacted by mode? 5) Do modes mediate the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and treatment outcomes? Inquisitive graduate students might want to explore any of these questions more formally in a thesis or dissertation. Can I also encourage other people on the list to share publications & other news, as I know many of you are publishing important child therapy research and it would be great if you could share with colleagues. (I feel a bit embarassed if I'm the only one doing this!). I'd also encourage others (esp. trainees) to use this e-group to post research-related queries etc., so that we make best use of the collective wisdom of this e-group 🙂 Best wishes, Nick Want to tell others you're published?
