Hi Yvonne,

Your topic is very interesting and relevant.  Attached is one recent publication.  You might in a general way look at a book authored by me, Simultaneous Treatment of Parent and Child.  Although dated it might still be relevant.

Dear all

I am new to the forum and would like to introduce myself and my research.

I am a parent infant psychoanalytic psychotherapist doing professional doctorate research on the question of what leads to change in personal relationships in families with children displaying pre-autistic behaviours?   In this study I am exploring whether there is a correlation between the changes in the parent’s internal representations and the changes in the symptoms of the autistic child over the course of a six-month treatment of parent infant psychotherapy.

My study focuses on the interactive process between a child/baby with autistic characteristics, and the parental internal representations of parents (arising from the parents own parents).  The connection is circular; each (autism and parental internal representations) affecting the other.  My thesis postulates that a psychotherapeutic parent infant intervention will alter both parental inner states, and the autistic symptoms.

I would welcome dialogue with anyone who is interested in this field, especially with regard to the operationalization of internal representations; also any suggestions  of papers that will assist me in thinking about a clear protocol for gauging parental inner states.

I look forward to sharing with you.

With best wishes
