I would like to thank all those who came up with helpful feedback about the ethical dilemma we had wrt our research on children who are food insecure and obese. You helped us think of a way forward which we think is ethical and sensitive which my trainee will be submitting for Ethics approval. In the first instance the school doctor who routinely weighs children and has the demographics of the family will inform families of the study. The choice of words for obesity and food insecurity (both highly stigmatised here in Malta and offensive for some as Jo Ashburner has pointed out) will be given importance and in this respect the terms suggested by Tracy Prout were very helpful. If the parents are willing that their children participate, they will be the ones to talk to their children about the study. The trainee is preparing an Information sheet for the parents and also one for the children. The latter will include a story regarding a student who wanted to know more about the subject. Thanks again. I will get in touch again next year once the trainee will finish her study.Best regardsangelaDear colleague, to unsubscribe please use the following URL: http://www.simplelists.com/confirm.php?u=ofJ0srCNHtyp4mFPCHPb1160R7R475HjOn 11 May 2016 at 08:29, Angela Abela <angela.abela@um.edu.mt> wrote:Hello everybody:))Dear colleague, to unsubscribe please use the following URL: http://archives.simplelists.comI have an ethical dilemma Which I would like to share with you. One of my clinical trainees, is interested in carrying out a piece of research on children who are obese and food insecure from a resilience perspective. She would like to seek the children's consent for the study... In terms of her methodology, she will adopt a narrative ethnography ... her method of inquiry is not intrusive...she will be asking them for stories and will also be observing them in the school context. Can she simply tell them that she would like to study their lives and gloss over obesity and food insecurity in her request for their consent? How does one reconcile non intrusive research with transparency with children aged 8?Thanks for any ideasAngela--Professor Angela Abela PhD Department of Family Studies Faculty for Social Wellbeing University of Malta Website http://www.um.edu.mt/socialwellbeing/familystudies Email : angela.abela@um.edu.mt--Professor Angela Abela PhD Department of Family Studies Faculty for Social Wellbeing University of Malta Website http://www.um.edu.mt/socialwellbeing/familystudies Email : angela.abela@um.edu.mt
